Philippe Jean is a Product Designer and Design Educator based in Toronto Canada.

This hybrid role is a reflection of my belief in the importance of bridging the gap between design academia and industry.

As a Product Designer at Index Exchange, I help to define problem, interpret product requirements, and understand the needs of our users. Day to day, I diverge and then converge solutions through a process of ideation, prototyping, and testing.

By working collaboratively with cross-functional teams such as product management and software engineers, I discover and clarify the what and the why of our products while leveraging my expertise in user experience, visual design, and product strategy to define the how.

As a Design Educator , I aim to activate creativity and to foster critical thinking and strong decision making from my students within their academic projects. As such by emphasizing outcome over output, I intend to apply a holistic design education for ultimately shape designers with a strong, personal voice and who can potentially provide leadership in their projects.

While my experience as an instructor or course director has mainly focused on the teaching of interactive design projects aiming to improve the user experience of a product through a human-centred approach to design practice, I also have expertise with—and a firm belief in—the concept of the designer as author, especially through the teaching of typography and image making classes. I have the ability to follow students working within the entire spectrum of design practices, including applied, exploratory, and speculative design.

Additionally, I completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design (BFA) from Université Laval in 2010 and a Master of Design (MDes) Degree from York University in 2015. I am also the recipient of two academic scholarships: one from the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and one from the René Richard Foundation.
